Preparing for an EEG
Getting ready for an EEG test can feel a little overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time. At EEG Services Australia, we’re here to guide you through each step so you feel comfortable, informed and confident. This page will help you understand what to expect during your setup, what to bring, and how to prepare for the most accurate results.
About your EEG Test
- You will come to the clinic, and one of our experienced Neurophysiology Scientists will set you up for the EEG test.
- Wires will be attached and secured to your head using a special paste, with the wires connected to a box that you wear over your shoulder for the duration of the test.
- Wires will be attached to your shoulders via disposable stickers to monitor heart rhythm and in some cases, muscle movement as well.
- If you have any tape, glue or parabens allergies, please notify the clinic before you attend for your EEG test.
- You will take home a bag with a tablet PC and video camera which must be plugged into a wall socket as soon as you arrive home.
Preparing for your EEG Test
- Come with clean, dry hair (NO conditioner, oil-based hair products, hair wax/gels) – Wash with shampoo only before the test. Conditioners, and hair products that contain oils will impact how secure the wires on your head are for the recording.
- Wear button up or loose-fitting clothing – Wires will be attached to your head and shoulders and connected to a box you carry on your shoulder. Button up clothing will be the easiest option to be able to change clothes during the test.
- Bring someone with you if feasible – Someone who will be able to assist you at home during the test.
- Arrange to travel home by car – So equipment can be kept safe, dry, and managed appropriately.
- Note down any questions you may want to ask during your setup appointment.
What is an EEG?
An EEG or “encephalogram” is a recording of the electrical activity of the brain, using metal discs called electrodes that are secured to the scalp using a conductive paste.
EEG Services Australia use the International 10-20 system of EEG placement which includes 21 wires placed in specific locations on the head. We also add 2 wires on the shoulders to monitor heart rhythm.
Each location we place an electrode, we use a mild cleaning/preparation gel and a cotton tip to ensure good quality signals. This will feel cold, and mildly scratchy for only a second or two.
The wires then passively monitor the electrical readings at each location and send them to the computer via a specialised amplifier.
There is no electrical stimulation involved.
The patient won’t feel anything.
Does it affect my hair/scalp?
No. Neither the preparation gel, or the conductive paste will affect the hair or scalp. The conductive paste is glycerin based, and will wash out with shampoo and conditioner at home. The scientist will remove most of the gel before you leave, but the remainder will wash out at home.
